Backed-up drains can spoil holiday festivities.

The City of Kelowna is reminding residents to dispose of cooking fats, oils, and grease (FOG) properly to avoid sewer blockages. The improper disposal of FOG is the leading cause of sewer clogs in the city. 

Pouring these substances down the drain not only damages home plumbing systems but also creates major problems for the city香蕉视频直播檚 wastewater infrastructure, clogging pipes and affecting sewer lift equipment.

The city recommends pouring cooled cooking grease into a sealable container with a lid. Once full, it can be safely discarded in the trash. Residents should use a strainer or basket over their sink drains to catch food scraps and solids, preventing them from going down the pipes.

Free biodegradable disposal cups for cooking grease are available for pick-up in the lobby at city hall located at 1435 Water Street from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday until the first week of January. City hall is closed Dec. 25 through Jan. 1, reopening and returning to regular hours on Jan. 2.
