The Penticton Mavericks clash with the Vernon Magnums at McNicol Field on Sunday, Aug. 25.

For the first time in 17 years, minor football has made its way back to the Penticton gridiron.

The Penticton Mavericks U12 hosted the Vernon Magnums for an exhibition game on Aug. 25, at McNicoll Park.

It marked the first action for the Mavericks since the Penticton Minor Football Association (PMFA) revived operations earlier this year.

"It was an unforgettable moment at McNicoll Park," PMFA said about Sunday's clash with Vernon in a social media post.

"We appreciate everyone who came out to cheer on our team and be part of this special day. It was truly a memorable event for all involved."

The game served as a pre-season tilt for the 2024 season, which will see Penticton's newly-formed U12 squad battle teams from Kelowna, Salmon Arm, Vernon and Kamloops in the Southern Interior Conference.

PMFA is affiliated with the British Columbia Provincial Football Association.

"We also want to extend our gratitude to the Vernon team for a great game and their sportsmanship," PMFA added about Sunday's exhibition showdown. "It was a pleasure to compete with such a respectful team."

Although the U12s represent PMFA's only team in 2024, the association says it hopes to add U10 and U14 divisions in 2025.
