The UBC Okanagan (UBCO) Heat men's and womenÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s basketball teams ended the 2024 portion of their season with losses to the UFV Cascades on Saturday (Nov. 30).
The menÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s team fell 92-75, with Jalen Shirley leading the Heat scorers with 17 points. DJ Frye added 16 points and five rebounds. The loss drops the men's record to 3-7, placing them sixth in the Canada West Pacific Division.
The womenÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s team lost 63-40. Lily Pink earned Player of the Game honours with 11 points, five rebounds, and one steal. Temi Aina contributed nine points, two steals, two blocks, and two rebounds. The women also sit at 3-7 and sixth spot in the Canada West BC Division, heading into the holiday break.
Both basketball teams will return to action on Jan. 17 in Edmonton. The men will face the Golden Bears, while the women take on the Pandas.
UBCOÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s volleyball teams also faced tough losses against the Calgary Dinos over the weekend.
The womenÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s team lost in three straight sets (16-25, 21-25, 18-25). Amaya Perry led the team with 11 kills on 24 attacks and added nine digs. Kirsten Hill contributed four kills on seven attacks. The women enter the break with a 4-6 record, sitting in ninth place in the Canada West standings with eight points.
The menÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s team also fell in three sets (21-25, 12-25, 16-25). Peter Labun had a career-best performance with seven kills on nine attacks. The men hold a 3-7 record with six points, putting them sixth in the Canada West Pacific division.
Both volleyball teams will be back in action on Jan. 10, hosting the UBC Thunderbirds at the UBCO Gymnasium.
