The Okanagan Rockets went 1-1 on the opening weekend of the B.C. Major Midget League season.

After receiving a lukewarm season-opening review from their head coach, the Okanagan Rockets will look for better results this weekend at the B.C. Major Midget League Showcase.

The Rockets will take on the Greater Vancouver Canadians on Friday and Saturday at the Richmond Oval.

With new head coach Eric Blais behind the bench, the Rockets settled for a split with the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds on opening weekend at the CNC.

On Saturday, Okanagan edged the Thunderbirds 3-2. Cody Schiavon scored the game winner on a third period power play. Dylan Prpich and Max Kryski also tallied in the win.

On Sunday, Fraser Valley returned the favour with a 5-3 win.

Prpich, Eli Zummack and Tanner Bahm scored in the loss.

While the Rockets showed flashes, Blais said overall it was a disappointing weekend.

Still, Blais assured there is plenty to build on.

"We were falling in and out of consistent play, and we lacked discipline, not just with penalties, but our structure wasn't very good,"said Blais, who was without key forwards Jordan Robinson and Chase Stevenson due to injury. "To be fair to the kids, we've thrown a lot at them. We want the kids to understand what's expected and just get better each week. The good thing is, it's early."

The Rockets next home action is Saturday, Oct. 8 against the Vancouver Northwwest Giants.
