The winter wind-up for the Armstrong Curling Club's daytime league was cause for double celebrations.

Club manager Steve Gunner revealed at the March 13 luncheon that there 27 active curlers 80 years or older, with three more turning 80 this year.

"Out of an average of 250 active curlers each year, that is an amazing statistic," said club member Terri Nicholson.

One of the members, Tim Smith, with his curling partner, has won the Provincial Championship in Stick Curling and also won the National Event.

Another curler, Frank Speed, celebrated his 87th birthday competing in the annual Tuff Spiel last December, finishing in fourth place.

"He competes regularly in various bonspiels and is a tireless volunteer in the summer, assisting with a lot of the needed maintenance work," said Nicholson.

In fact, many are tireless volunteers who do a lot of the work necessary to keep the club running so they can continue to play.

"We provide not just an activity for these seniors but also a social club where we gather before and after our games to stay connected over the winter months," said Nicholson.

"This highlights how amazing our sport of curling is. We have curlers ranging from seven or eight to 88. How many other winter sports can boast that? It can truly be a family sport with multiple generations able to play together."

Curling is also an affordable sport with reasonable league dues and a beginner only needing layered clothing, gloves, and clean rubber soled shoes and they can borrow the equipment needed.

The club also offers lessons in the fall with certified coaches.
