Efforts to protect Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park from wildfires are slated to begin next week. 

The Ministry of Forestry has advised that wildfire risk reduction work is scheduled to take place at the park along Cosens Bay Road as early as Monday, Nov. 4 and last through to the end of December. 

Activities will include danger tree removal, removal of understorey trees and ladder fuels as well as surface fuel clean-up.

People can expect to see signage, crews and equipment working, including wood chippers. Temporary traffic stoppages, speed limit reductions and trail closures may also be in place. People are asked to respect all signage and personnel to help keep crews safe.

A few trails in the park could potentially be impacted by the work. They include the Sidewinder, Cosens Bay and High Rim trails. 

The work is designed to reduce negative impacts in the event of a wildfire and improve both public and emergency responder safety, while managing ecological, recreational and cultural values, according to the district.
