Sicamous RCMP find abandoned RV ablaze at provincial park

Driver in single-vehicle crash issued prohibition

Inadequate tires was one of several issues police found at the site of a single-vehicle crash on Highway 1. 

RCMP and the BC Highway Patrol responded to the incident east of Sicamous near Kerr Road at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8. Police found a westbound Mazda pickup truck had crossed the double solid lines at the centre of the road and and struck a hydro pole in an eastbound ditch. 

In a media release, Sgt. Murray McNeil said an attending officer "immediately noted signs of impairment while speaking to the 28-year-old driver," the vehicle's lone occupant. The driver was detained by police and later failed a sobriety test at performed at the Sicamous detachment. As a result, the 28-year-old was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition "due to impairment by drugs." They were also issued tickets for driving with inadequate tires and failing to maintain their lane of travel. 

RV fire 

At 9 p.m. on the night prior (Dec. 7), Sicamous RCMP responded to a vehicle fire at the Mara Provincial Park parking lot. Police arrived to find a 1979 motorhome fully engulfed. After the fire was out, police and Swansea Point firefighters determined the vehicle was unoccupied, uninsured and appeared to have been abandoned. McNeil said the cause of the fire was unknown, than the park was spared of any damage, and that BC Parks had been notified and he vehicle's remains would be removed.
