A barn fire came dangerously close to a second barn in Spallumcheen Feb. 4.

Farmers were able to rescue horses from an early-morning barn blaze Tuesday, Feb. 4.

The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. in the Round Prairie Road structure near Armstrong.

"There were horses in the barn, the owners got them out before we arrived," Armstrong Spallumcheen fire chief Rob Brown said. "I believe it was three or four."

The fire was away from the home but in close proximity to another barn, which firefighters were able to save.

The one barn was completely destroyed and with the farmers losing everything a community effort is underway to support them.

Mills Vet is collecting donations for the owners.

"One of our wonderful clients suffered a devastating loss (Monday) night when their barn tragically burned down. By some miracle, they woke during the night and were able to get their horses out just in time. However, everything else was lost," the Armstrong vet office said.

"These are the kind of people who always give but never ask Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥” so on their behalf, we are reaching out to our incredible horse community for support."

Pitchforks, a wheelbarrow, buckets, extra halters and beet pulp are needed and can be dropped off at Mills Vet.

Etransfers can also be sent to - reference that it is a donation and funds will be forwarded to the client.

A cause of the blaze has not yet been determined but Brown cautions residents during the winter to be careful with heat sources.

"People with portable heaters, make sure they're in good condition with cords and do not use extension cords," Brown urges.
