West Kelowna Warriors topple Vernon Vipers in home opener

The West Kelowna Warriors earned their first win of the season on Friday, Sept. 27, beating Vernon 2-1.

The West Kelowna Warriors are in the win column this season after doubling up the Vernon Vipers, 2-1 on Friday, Sept. 27 at Royal LePage Place.

Vernon opened the scoring in the first period when Lucas Brennan scored his second goal of the season at the 12:48 mark, assisted by Simon Brinkley.

But with 65 seconds left to go in the frame, Warriors Carter Oakenfold scored shorthanded, unassisted, tying the game.

And then, early in the second period, Jack Pridham's second goal of the season was the difference maker in the game, leading West Kelowna to the win. Callum Hughes collected the helper on the goal.

Warriors goaltender Ayo Ogini stood on his head in his BCHL debut, making 21 saves to earn his first win while Vipers netminder Colin Reay made 25 stops in the loss. 

Both teams went 0/3 on the powerplay.

With the win, the Warriors are 1-1-1 on the year while the Vipers are 0-3.

As it was the Warriors home opener, the team held some pre-game festivities. Including in that, Landen Hilditch was named the Warriors new team captain in front of the hometown fans.

The Warriors and Vipers will do it all again on Saturday night as they head up Highway 97 to play at Kal Tire Place in Vernon to finish off the home-and-home series. Puck drop is at 6 p.m.
