The "What Were You Wearing?" exhibit has been touring Okanagan College campuses to change the narrative around sexual assault survivors.
The exhibit displays outfits similar to ones worn at the time a person was victimized, including a comment from the survivor, to dispel the myth that sexual assault victims were asking for it based on the clothes they wore.
"What Were You Wearing?" originated at the University of Kansas.
"These are stories that those students wrote and we've curated outfits that match the description," said Megan Gray, a member of the Okanagan College Student Union and with the college's Sexual Violence Committee.
"The prom dress looks very similar to the one I wore in high school," Gray said, pointing to a purplish-blue gown with silver embellishments. "That's the one that when we put it up made me stop and go, 'Oh my gosh'."
The survivor's comment on the prom dress read, "My prom dress. Don't know if that needs much more explanation."
Other outfits included children's pyjamas, men's boxers, work uniforms, and a sari.
"The reality is that sexual violence is most commonly done by someone you know, and people of all genders can be sexually assaulted," Gray added.
The exhibit stops once more at the Penticton campus on Feb. 11 and 12.
