One person was taken to hospital was a result of a mattress fire in a Centennial Crescent residence on Friday night.
Around 7:30 p.m. on March 14, the Kelowna Fire Department (KFD) received multiple reports of a blaze in the 1100-block of Centennial Crescent. Witnesses in the area could see smoke and flame coming from the area at the same time.
When fire crews first arrived at the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a rear window of the home. The initial crews dampened the blaze while the attack team entered through the front door.
Crews were able to contain the blaze to one bedroom and ventilation started right away. However, there was heavy smoke damage to the first floor and some water damage to the basement.
During the blaze, Centennial Crescent was closed in both directions.
Six residents were in the house at the time of the blaze. One was taken to Kelowna General Hospital with minor burns to their hands while the other five were put in the care of Emergency Support Service (ESS) as the home is unlivable at this time due to damages.
There were no injuries to the 14 KFD members that were at the scene, which included three engines, a rescue unit, a command unit and an assistant chief.
The Kelowna RCMP and FortisBC also attended the scene.
A has been started to help the six people restart their lives.
"In the blink of an eye, they are facing the heartbreaking loss not only of their home but also their personal belongings," reads the page started by Maizal Munif. "Now, after this traumatic event these resilient individuals face the daunting task of starting over without the basic necessities many of us take for granted."
Munif has a goal of $5,000 to help the six individuals with temporary housing, clothing and hygiene items, daily food and living expenses, and to help replace items lost in the fire.
