Candlelight vigils take place Wednesday, Nov. 20 for Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Candles will glow in honour of those whose fight to be themselves was cut short.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is marked throughout the Okanagan Wednesday, Nov. 20.

Kelowna residents can join Advocacy Canada at 7 p.m. for a candlelight vigil at Stuart Park (by the Bear Sculpture).

The South Okanagan Similkameen Pride group hosts a candlelight vigil and walk at 6:30 p.m. in front of Penticton City Hall, 171 Main St.

The Vernon Pride Society also hosts a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m.

"The vigil will take place at Spirit Square to remember our trans, two spirit, and nonbinary siblings who have passed this year," said Vernon Pride. "We will then be moving over to Ritual Barbershop to where we will have poetry and spoken word presented by trans folks in our community."

The solemn event takes place in the garden area between the Vernon Museum and Archives and city hall at 3400 30th St. Those in attendance are invited across the street to Ritual Barbershop (3002 32nd Ave.) after the vigil for warm drinks, snacks and further reflection.

The event is free and wheelchair accessible.

Last year's Vernon event alone saw nearly 100 people come out.
