Outreach services in Kelowna are asking the public for help in ensuring those experiencing un-sheltered homelessness during the heat wave are safe.

The Kelowna branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), with support from Interior Health, is working to ensure vulnerable members of the community and those sheltering outdoors have essential supplies including water, sunscreen and aloe vera, shelter necessities, hats, heat-appropriate clothing, and other cooling supplies.

Environment Canada issued a severe weather alert for the Central Okanagan this week, with temperatures expected to exceed 30 C for more than a week.

To help those most vulnerable during the heatwave, CMHA Kelowna is accepting donations of sunscreen, hats, cooling packs, and battery-operated fans. Donations can be dropped off at their office located at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Additionally, the CMHA team has been out on the streets working with those experiencing un-sheltered homelessness to ask people what they need and perform wellness checks. The outreach workers will also coordinate transportation to cooling centres and medical services when necessary.
