Kelowna fire crews respond to smoke at an apartment building on Gordon Drive on Sept. 16, 2024.

The Kelowna Fire Department quickly doused a mattress fire inside a two-storey apartment building on Gordon Drive.

The call came in around 1:15 p.m. Sept. 16, with reports of smoke in the 1700-block of Gordon Drive.

Platoon Captain Corrie Lang said, "We got here just in time."

The fire was started by smoking material left on top of a mattress.

The fire was contained to the mattress, but smoke damaged part of the interior of the building.

The building is currently operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association as supportive housing and affordable rental and was formally the Econo Lodge motel.

No injuries were reported.
