From mini murals to workshops and an art walk, the lead up to Penticton's biggest spring festival is underway as Ignite the Arts' Community Week kicks off March 21.
The headline event to start everything off, as it has for the previous three years, is the unveiling of the mini murals at Cannery Brewing, which has partnered with the Penticton Art Gallery since before the first Ignite the Arts in 2022.
The artists, Caroline Anders, Benji Andringa, Barbara Fresz, Jan Little, Joie Paré, Libby Parsons, Kirsten Robertson, Paityn Savoie, Otto Schade, & Raymond Thomas Syrja, will have their work displayed starting at 6 p.m. on March 21 all the way through to October.
South Okanagan Similkameen Pride is also hosting a drop in interactive class is for 16+ queer folks and allies on March 21 at the Leir House.
Day two will see several events take place across the community, as well as the opening of not one or two but three exhibitions at the Penticton Art Gallery.
In partnership with the Penticton and District Arts Council, interested individuals can take an Art Walk through the community from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., collecting stamps for your passport at each of the more than 20 different locations to increase your chances at winning a prize.
At the Aurora Matheson Gallery on Martin Street, March 22 will be Sculpture Day with a mini-art market and live painting, live music and a family sculpture contest.
The day ends with the grand openings of Tsuneko Kokubo's exhibition Following The Water, Alexandra BischoffÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s Homesick and Raghu LokanathanÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s Script.
Japanese-Canadian artist Kokubo's exhibition is inspired by her visits to the sites of internment camps in the Kootenay-Boundary region and the bodies of water there.
Script takes found objects and uses them to ask questions, such as the passage of time, waste, value and decomposition.
Bischoff's Homesick is an exploration of her family's history, building off her book Lloyd O, about her maternal grandfather and how his decisions and early death impacted his children.
More workshops are planned through the rest of Community Week, with the main Ignite the Arts festival running from March 28 to 30.
The list of events for each day and ways to register for workshops and events like the family sculpture contest can be found on the Ignite the Arts .
