Shuswap residents will soon be joining fellow concerned citizens in sharing a public call for urgent climate action.

Rallies are planned to occur across Canada, and the globe, between Sept. 20 to 27, and while events vary in name, they're for a shared purpose, to demand action on climate change.

The Shuswap Climate Action Society (SCAS) has planned a rally, to coincide with the Global Climate March and Rally, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Salmon Arm's Ross Street Plaza on Friday, Sept. 27.

"August was the 15th straight month of record high global temperatures, and climate-intensified disasters are being felt everywhere," reads a SCAS media release. "There has never been a more urgent need to turn that climate anxiety into ACTION! Please join us and show your support for real climate action as a participant in the Global March for Climate!"

Those wishing to participate are urged to bring signs and be prepared to raise their voice as they march through the downtown and back to Ross Street Plaza where individuals and local groups will "share about the urgency and benefits of effective climate action."

On Tuesday, Oct. 1, Shuswap Climate Action Society hosts another event: a Seniors For Climate movie night, which runs from 7 to 9 p.m. at the 5th Avenue 50 Plus Activity Centre in Salmon Arm.  

"This Canada-wide day of action aligns with National Seniors Day, providing an opportunity for seniors and people of all generations to show their support for climate action," said the SCAS chair Julia Beatty. The organization will be presenting the documentary Common Ground, the recently released follow-up to Kiss the Ground by documentarians Rebecca and Josh Tickell. The film focuses on the threats the climate crisis poses to food sovereignty and security.

Admission is by donation and the film will be followed with a presentation by guest speaker Dr. Warren Bell, the host of Food Conversations on CKVS/Voice of the Shuswap.
