An outhouse extravaganza took over the village of Lumby on Sunday, Jan. 26.
The fourth annual race, this time hosted at the bigger Oval Park, brought out dozens of residents for a showcase of fun.
"It was an amazing turnout," said Stephanie Sexsmith, executive director at the Lumby and District Chamber of Commerce. "We are really pleased with the new location as well."
The previous renditions of the race was hosted at the west salmon trail parking lot. In 2025, it moved to Oval Park, and was taken over by the Lumby and District Chamber of Commerce from the Monashee Trails Society.
"We really felt that the community valued the event," said Sexmith. "It was really important to the Chamber and all of our businesses to keep an event like this local and we had a great group of volunteers helping us."
Sexmith wanted to thank the Village of Lumby crews for helping truck in snow for the event.
"We had a few less teams this year," Sexmith said, as nine competed, compared to 20 a year ago. "People were a little bit skeptical we weren't going to have enough snow, but our municipality was able to help us out."
As for the races, nine outhouses took part, competing in head-to-head heats. In the end, the Lumby Fire Department's Bush 1 came in first, with Wiped Clean scoring second and the elder Lumby Fire Department crew, Tender 2, in the third spot. The People's Choice award went to Rad Dad, whose outhouse had extra bells and whistles, including a candy dispenser.
Winners received gift cards from Jitter Beans Coffee House.
The Monashee Trail Society created the race in 2022 as a means of wanting to get more people outside in the dredge of winter and drum up community spirit.
