Led by a Vernon local, the Grand Forks Border Bruins are the B.C. Junior A Tier 2 hockey champions.

Tyler Burke and his Border Bruins defeated the Ridge Meadows Flames 9-6 in Game 4 of the best-of-five Mowat Cup final to win the series 3-1 on Sunday, April 27.

The Mowat Cup is the final between the winners of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) and Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL).

Grand Forks rolled through the KIJHL playoffs, dropping just one game en route to a four-game sweep of the Revelstoke Grizzlies to capture the Teck Cup.

In the Mowat Cup, the Bruins won games one and two 3-2 and 5-3, before dropping game three, 5-4.

Through it all, Burke has been the team's star. The 20-year-old put up 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in 17 games, and won MVP during the Teck Cup finals.

The forward led all Mowat Cup scorers in points, tabulating seven goals and four assists in the four games, including a hat-trick in game three.

The Border Bruins had not won a KIJHL championship in its 56th year history, until this year and can now add the Mowat Cup to their expanding trophy case. Although the PresidentsÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™ Cup (league playoff champion) is relatively new for the KIJHL, the Bruins outstanding season represents the only time the PresidentsÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™ Cup, Kootenay Conference Champion Cup, Teck Cup, and Mowat Cup have all been held by one team.

They ending up finishing with an impressive 19-2 record through the playoffs, and an overall 2024-25 season record with 52 wins, eight losses, and five overtime losses.

Burke began his career with the North Okanagan Knights in 2021-22, before moving to the Sicamous Eagles midway through the 2022-23 season. He was then dealt halfway through last year to Grand Forks.
