A national biathlon competition in town this weekend is looking for some help to pull the event off.
The NorAm/BC Biathlon Cup will be taking place at the Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre from Dec. 14-15.
"No experience is necessary and we provide on-site training," said event organizer Kerry VanSickle. "All volunteers receive a complimentary cross-country trail pass to keep or give to family and friends. They will also receive a lunch and snacks and be entered into a lucky draw where they could win goods from our sponsors."
Biathlon is an Olympic winter sport that combines cross-country skiing with rifle shooting. Athletes ranging in age from 10 to 70 plus will be at the Nordic Centre over the weekend for the two-day event.
The competition will see 32 local athletes competing in a pool of nearly 200 from across B.C., Yukon, Alberta and the US.
A variety of volunteer duties include handing out bibs, biathlon range recording, providing food to athletes and handing out timing chips.
"It takes approximately 60-77 volunteers each day to run an event like this one," said VanSickle. "Volunteers are an integral part of the action and events like these cannot run without the hard work and willingness of volunteers to step forward."
On Friday, Dec. 13 a try-it-free biathlon event will take place from 1:30-3:30 p.m. All ages are welcome and laser rifles will be used.
