The District of Sicamous is showing some flex appeal as the host of a heavyweight event this summer.
In an update to council at the April 9 Committee of the Whole meeting, recreation manager Jamie Sherlock announced the "brand new Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥“ sort of Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥“ event to the community," the Shuswap Showdown, that has actually been in the works for a few years.
"Pre-COVID we were starting to work on a strongman competition and it was very well received within the community," she said. "It's taken a few years, but now we have a local chapter within the Okanagan who would like to branch out into the Shuswap."
The Showdown will take place July 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Finlayson Park, with a lineup of five events that includes the Overhead Medley (log, axle bar and sandbag), Yoke Squat with maximum repetitions, Farmer's Carry, Axle Bar Deadlift, and Conan's Wheel, which will "separate the toughest competitors from the pack."
The event already has 11 registrants already signed on, with the goal being 30 participants this year. Registration is available through the recreation tab at sicamous.ca. Full descriptions of the individual events can also be found there.
Despite this being the first Shuswap Showdown, Sherlock is already looking to expand it next year into a two-day event, with one devoted to the strongman competition and the second to a CrossFit competition. She added the district is also going to be hosting the Canadian National Championship for females next year.
"So we will have the strongest women in all of Canada coming here to compete within our community," Sherlock added. "So again, another national recognition."
