Penticton track stars shine at BC Summer Games

Six locals compete on the track for Thompson-Okanagan

Penticton was well represented when track and field took centre stage at the 2024 BC Summer Games in Maple Ridge.

Six local track and field athletes suited up for the Thompson-Okanagan region from July 17 to 21, with one setting an event record and taking home three medals.

Tyler Hvidston broke a BC Summer Games record in boys pole vaulting, winning the gold and later claiming an additional two medals in the 300-metre hurdles and 100-metre hurdles final.

Hvidston, who claimed three of the Thompson-Okanagan's 82 medals at the BC Summer Games, was joined by fellow locals Sebastian Osiowy, Mya Kelly, Ella Walker, Presley Hickie and Sophia Carleton-Palanio on the track in Maple Ridge.

Osiowy, Kelly and Carleton-Palanio teamed up to help the region capture a bronze medal in the 400-metre relay event.

Walker and Hickie, meanwhile, each posted fourth-place finishes in the 800-metre and 2000-metre events, respectively.

The BC Summer Games wrapped up July 21, with Vancouver Island-Central Coast finding itself atop the medal standings with 166.

Thompson-Okanagan athletes combined took home 31 gold medals, good enough for fifth on the province-wide list.
