The B.C. U18 women's curling champions from Vernon-Kamloops start play Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Canadian championships in Saskatoon. The team includes (from left): skip Ava Arndt (Vernon); third Brittany Evans (Kamloops); second Ivy Jensen (Vernon); and lead Alicia Evans (Kamloops). The team is coached by Dave Arndt.

Okanagan curling teams are slow to start off their national championship quest.

The six-day Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships are taking place in Saskatoon. Three teams, two on the women's and one on the men's reside in the Okanagan.

BC1, a Vernon-Kamloops hybrid squad, finished day one with two losses in two games played.

Game one was a tough, 9-3 loss to Alberta's Abby Desormeau's team. The second game was closer, but BC1 lost, 7-6 to Team Saskatchewan's Renee Wood.

Vernon's Ava Arndt skips BC1. Third is Vernon's Bethany Evans, second is Ivy Jensen, and lead is her sister, Alicia Evans from Kelowna. The team is coached by Ava's dad, David.

BC2, from Kelowna and Penticton, has yet to get their tournament started. The team is skipped by Megan Rempel, with her sister, Parker, serving as the third. Second is Gwyneth Jones and lead is Ella Walker.

On the men's side, Team BC1, represented by the Kelowna Curling Club, dropped their opener, 6-3 to Team Manitoba.

The team is skipped by Owen Jaeger, with third Spencer Rempel, second Noah Wielgosz and lead Brendan Hruschak.

Boys and girls teams are competing in three pools of seven each, with the top four from each pool advancing to the championship bracket.

The tournament was originally scheduled to start on Sunday, but was delayed due to a snowstorm. The draw has been reworked to allow late-arriving teams to play a full slate of round-robin matches.
