UBCO's Spencer Young battles Cameron Sjerve of the Alberta Golden Bears in Canada West soccer playoff action Saturday in Edmonton.

Both UBC Okanagan teams watched their Canada West soccer seasons come to a  conclusion on the road on Saturday afternoon.

In the opening games of the post season, the Heat men fell to the No. 2-ranked Alberta Golden Bears, while the Heat women were shutout in Langley by the Trinity Western Spartans.

Heat men

The Heat kept the game within each right up to the the final seconds, but in the end fell 1-0 to the second-seeded Bears Saturday at Foote Field in Edmonton.

Alberta controlled play for most of the game, getting seven shots on UBCO keeper Mitch McCaw, while the Heat was unable to register a shot.

McCaw made six saves in the match, the most impressive of which was made on a penalty kick taken by Canada West leading scorer Ajeej Sarkaria in the 19th minute.

The first and only goal in the match came when Noah Cunningham headed one past McCaw in the 65th minute.

While the Heat's season ends, the Bears move on to the Canada West final six beginning this Thursday.

Heat women

In the Heat's first ever Canada West playoffs, the top-seeded TWU Spartans were too much for UBCO in a 3-0 win Saturday at Chase Field.

The unbeaten and heavily favoured Spartans scored in the 20th, 23rd and 87th minutes.

Playing in their first ever Canada West playoff game, the Heat were held to just two shots on goal, while goalie Chloe Ainsworth made three saves for UBCO.

Under the guidance of head coach Craig Smith, the Heat went a program-best 4-9-1 during the regular season.

UBCO finished sixth in the Pacific Division, good enough to clinch a postseason berth for the first time.
