Okanagan hockey players medal at 2024 U17 World Challenge

This is the second consecutive gold medal at the tournament for Canada White

Four Western Hockey League (WHL) players from the Okanagan earned medals at the 2024 U17 World Challenge, which took place Nov. 1-9 in Sarnia, Ontario.

Canada White defeated Canada Red 3-1 to earn the gold medal. Spokane Chiefs forward Mathis Preston from Penticton was the star for Canada White, scoring six goals and seven points, including a goal in the gold medal win.

Liam Ruck and Markus Ruck (Medicine Hat Tigers) from Osoyoos also won gold with Canada White. Joe Iginla (Edmonton Oil Kings) from Lake Country won silver with Canada Red.

Preston and Ruck brothers are alumni of Okanagan Hockey Academy Penticton (OHAP). 

"The trio, best friends since the age of five, dreamed of winning gold for Canada as young players in local tournaments," states a release from OHAP. "They spent years building their bond through spring hockey and prestigious tournaments across North America, including the famed Brick Invitational Tournament at Edmonton香蕉视频直播檚 West Edmonton Mall in 2018."

Markus and Liam Ruck played in the South Okanagan Minor Hockey Association, while Preston was active in Penticton Minor Hockey. All three attended Okanagan Hockey Academy Penticton from U15 through U18 Prep, graduating in 2024. All three were first-round draft picks in the 2023 WHL draft. Preston was chosen 3rd overall, Liam 9th, and Markus 21st.
