To the editor:
I want to thank Guy King for his thoughtful letter of July 19 regarding his disappointment at the vitriol being expressed over the Khadr settlement.
It was a pleasure to read his compassionate and reasoned thoughts on this. We are also very pleased that we live in a country that sees fit to compensate a citizen when his Charter rights have been so seriously violated. The complexities of this particular case seem to have been missed or willfully ignored by so many and that troubles me. Would these folks really think a boy of about 11 years old would or even could go against his parentsÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™ wishes when the decision was made to move from Canada to Afghanistan?
The ruling was based on our government decision to violate the charter rights of this young Canadian. Omar was 15 when the incident took place and the UN defines that as a child soldier, knowing that most if not all child soldiers are doing the bidding of elders with an agenda.
