The start of 2025 can be seen as a time of new beginnings.

It's the start of a brand new year, with plenty of new opportunities in the days and months ahead.

This is the time when resolutions are made and goals are set for the coming year.

But the year will also have its share of obstacles and challenges. While the specifics are yet to play out, some of the biggest issues are already known.

The biggest issues facing the community, the province, the country and the world in 2024 and earlier will continue in the coming year.

Housing affordability and a housing shortage Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥” two related parts of a similar problem Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥” were concerns in 2024 and earlier, and have not yet been resolved.

British ColumbiaÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s toxic drug crisis, identified as a public health emergency in 2016, has not come to an end. People across the province have lost family members and friends to toxic illicit drugs.

A devastating cold snap in the Southern Interior, a damaging wildfire season particularly in the province's north and an atmospheric river event in October, were two of the weather-related events in a trend stretching back several years.

It is likely 2025 will see its own extreme weather events.

The provinceÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s unemployment rate, while lower than the national average, was higher at the end of 2024 than it was in 2022 and 2023. According to the Chartered Professional Accountants of B.C., a weakening job market has been observed.

Whatever lies ahead in 2025, chances are good that it will not be something completely new and unprecedented. Most of the issues which will affect us are already known.

However, while some challenges are continuing, they are not necessarily insurmountable.

There are some knowledgeable and insightful people who can provide background and offer effective ways to respond.

Some of the informed suggestions that will be presented may seem unconventional or extreme, but they should be considered.

With careful thought and consideration this year, it is possible to make some progress on the biggest issues facing us in 2025.

The future depends on the choices we make today.
