The Addams Family, an eccentric and bizarre family from popular culture, will make their appearance on stage at Summerland Secondary School in February.

The Addams Family, a musical comedy, features the quirky family of Morticia and Gomez Adams, their children Pugsley and Wednesday, and embers of their extended family.

The musical, first performed on Broadway in 2010, is inspired by The Addams Family television series from 1954 to 1966. After the show ended, it remained popular among viewers. The family also appeared in movies in 1991, 1993, 2019 and 2021. The New Addams Family series aired on television from 1998 to 1999.

She said most of the cast members were not familiar with the 1960s or 1990s version of the Addams Family, but know of the Netflix series, Wednesday, which is inspired by the original series.

Ayris said students have been enthusiastic about the musical. There are 85 students in the cast and crew, including 12 to 14 students in Grade 8. There is also a large group of Grade 11 and 12 students.

For the cast members, the rehearsal schedule has been intense, with practices three days a week. In addition, many of the cast members have been involved in building the sets needed for the production.

Ayris said she is impressed with the work the students have done in preparing for the musical.

In addition to the rehearsals, students have also been involved in ticket sales and fundraising for the program.

The musical will be staged at Centre Stage Theatre in Summerland from Feb. 20 to 22 and on Feb. 27, 28 and March 1. All shows begin at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $20 each, with a two-for-one sale for opening night.
