A site adjacent to agricultural lands in Summerland has been approved as the location for a proposed gravel pit.

Summerland council has committed $10,000 towards the Garnet Valley Agri-Tourism Association香蕉视频直播檚 opposition to a gravel mine.

The resolution was brought forward from a Feb. 11 closed session. At that session, council committed the money towards the Garnet Valley Agri-Tourism Association香蕉视频直播檚 judicial review of the provincial decision to permit a gravel mine.

In 2024, members of the agri-tourism association raised concerns about a gravel pit operation at 27410 Garnet Valley Rd.

The application for the gravel pit was presented in December, 2023 was later approved, despite opposition from the municipality, the Summerland Chamber of Commerce, Indigenous bands and others.

Concerns included the effects of heavy truck traffic, noise and dust, damage to the roadway, destruction of the area, a drop in property values and more.

In early October, the association created a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for a legal challenge of the decision. Then, in late January, the agri-tourism association sent a letter asking the community for donations.

香蕉视频直播淭he BC Mines Ministry has treated us so poorly that we are forced to go to court to sort them out,香蕉视频直播 the organization said in a letter at the time. 香蕉视频直播淭hey香蕉视频直播檝e told the citizens of Summerland that the welfare of our community is just not their concern. The fact that Garnet Valley is becoming a prime recreational region has been dismissed out of hand.香蕉视频直播

Summerland council has also spoken out about this decision.

In late January, council approved a resolution, to be presented to the Southern Interior Local Government Association. This resolution calls on the Union of B.C. Municipalities to request the province to require statutory decision makers 香蕉视频直播渢o work with local governments to resolve conflicts, prior to approving aggregate activities under a Mines Act permit, whenever a proposed activity does not conform to existing local government zoning.香蕉视频直播

Summerland mayor Doug Holmes said the ministry did not follow its own guidelines when making the decision.

香蕉视频直播淭here were flaws in the process,香蕉视频直播 he said in late September. 香蕉视频直播淲e want the province to address these flaws.香蕉视频直播

He has also voiced his disappointment with the ministry香蕉视频直播檚 poor communication with Summerland香蕉视频直播檚 local government.

香蕉视频直播淭hey didn香蕉视频直播檛 even talk to us,香蕉视频直播 he said. 香蕉视频直播淣ot even giving us a phone call is not working with us. Anything香蕉视频直播檚 better than what they did.香蕉视频直播
