A severe rainstorm forecast for the Shuswap could increase the risk of landslides and flooding, particularly in wildfire-affected areas.

In a media release Wednesday afternoon, March 26, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) provided precautionary information as the rain, combined with a possible increase in snowmelt, could create hazards. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement saying conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms from now until Saturday evening, March 29.

"There is increased risk of landslides or flooding in the areas affected by wildfires in the Shuswap over the past five years," the release said. "Intense rain, or rain combined with snowmelt, in these affected areas can trigger debris flows and debris floods that could threaten public safety and property."

The CSRD advised residents to make an emergency plan with a kit ready, monitor weather forecasts, avoid going near streams or other waterways and prepare for power outages. The release also noted that landslides can happen quickly and without warning and suggested those living in wildfire-impacted areas consider leaving until the storm has passed.

Signs that indicate a slide or flooding include an abrupt increase or decrease in stream flows, a change in water colour in a stream or creek to a muddy brown, trees cracking or breaking, shading ground, loud noise, the trees falling or a roar.
