Princeton staff will apply for funding to install residential water meters and the applicable infrastructure in the community.

The funding application, through the British Columbia Water Meter Pilot Project, received council support for up to $5 million, fully funded through the program.

At the Jan. 15 Princeton council meeting, Jared Thomas, manager of civil works for the community, said the project is for the purchase and installation of residential water meters, along with other components needed for the program.

In his report to council, he said Canadians who live in homes with meters use around 39 per cent less water than those living in homes that are not metered.

He added that if a municipality charges 81 cents per cubic metres of water, the drip would add $260.17 to a water bill. Other leaks, such as running toilets or service line leaks, would cost considerably more, he added.

The water meter pilot program is designed for smaller communities, with between 300 and 5,000 water service connections, with a preference for systems with fewer than 3,000 connections.

Princeton has around 1,335 water meter accounts.

The deadline to submit the application is Jan. 30.
