Ash Regner will be taking over as Fire Chief in Oliver as of Dec. 31, with Fire Chief Bob Graham retiring after 33 years firefighting in the community.

Starting Dec. 19, the Oliver Fire Department will have a new chief in charge for the first time since 2017.

The town announced on Dec. 10 that Ash Regner, current deputy fire chief of operations, has been selected to take over the role from longtime Oliver firefighter Bob Graham.

Graham will officially retire on Dec. 31 after serving seven years as the fire chief and 33 years as a firefighter in Oliver.

"Bob represents the true spirit of service, having dedicated 33 years of his life to the fire department. Through countless emergencies, he was a steadfast presence, responding with skill, compassion, and a sense of duty," the Oliver Fire Department said in its announcement.

Regner has served as a firefighter in the community since 2014, and was promoted to captain in 2019.

The fire department is made up of 34 paid on call members, and Regner will take over the responsibility for the management and administration of the fire department, fire suppression, fire prevention operations and programs, and related emergency services.

Regner will have big shoes to fill, with Graham's years of service earning him recognition not only from the local community. In 2020, Graham was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Associations Municipal Long Service Medal.

"What makes his years of service even more remarkable is the legacy he built with his own family," said the Oliver Fire Department. "Serving alongside his children, Greg, Kevin, and current deputy Robert, over the last 33 years, not only passing down the expertise of the job but also the values of honour, sacrifice, and teamwork that shape the firefighting profession."
