Oliver parents John and Destinee Ulutoa welcome Baby Zimri Elia Ulutoa to the world.

Nearly 16 hours into 2025, the first baby of the new year born in the South Okanagan was welcomed to the world.

At 3:52 p.m., Destinee Ulutoa, with partner John by her side, gave birth to a baby boy named Zimri Elia Ulutoa.

"We joked about him being a New Year's baby, but we didn't think it was possible," said Destinee, who lives in Oliver. "We spent New Year's Eve in the hospital watching the fireworks, so it was really nice."

The newborn was birthed at Penticton Regional Hospital and is eight pounds, 15 ounces.

Destinee praised the hospital staff for their efforts on Jan. 1.

"I'm very grateful for everybody who supported us through this experience," she said.
