A new clinic space that is set to bring three additional doctors to Penticton has gotten a new name and a big donation along with it.
The new clinic, which will provide walk-in and longitudinal care, will be named the Colleen Schneider Medical Centre, in honour of her generous million dollar donation towards the South Okanagan Similkameen Healthcare Society's (SOSMHS) $2.1 million fundraising goal.
The donation was presented by the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation (SOSMF) to the society to go towards the necessary renovations for the clinic space.
"This donation is more than just financial support香蕉视频直播攊t香蕉视频直播檚 a lifeline for families who struggle to find a doctor. It香蕉视频直播檚 a bold investment in the well-being of our community," said SOSMF CEO Ian Lindsay. "We are proud to stand behind a project that will have an enduring impact on healthcare in our region."
The new clinic, located within the Community Futures building, will have 20 exam and procedure rooms with space for 30 healthcare practitioners including doctors, physiotherapists, social workers and other providers once work is complete.
In addition to physicians already in the community who have signed up to move in, three new physicians have committed to moving to the community as well.
The new clinic will replace the current Community Walk-In Clinic, which has faced increasing space and operational constraints," the SOSHS said in a press release. By expanding services and introducing an integrated, team-based model, the Colleen Schneider Medical Centre has already recruited new physicians to attach new patients, support unattached patients, and reduce pressure on emergency services."
Construction is currently underway on the renovations, with a goal of having the clinic open by the summer of 2025.
Penticton city council gave their support for the project in 2024, including directing staff to prioritize the permits for the construction work.
While the $1 million donation goes a long way towards the society's goal, more donations are needed in order to get the project to the finish line.
"This milestone highlights the impact of community-driven healthcare, where local generosity creates meaningful change," said the SOSHS. "Every donation, no matter the size, helps make a difference."
