Crash causes Highway 1 closure, power outages for 4,300 Sicamous residents

Power has been out since 8:50 a.m.

UPDATE 1:09 p.m.

DriveBC is reporting that Highway 1 is estimated to reopen at 3 p.m.

The road has been closed in both directions since just before 9 a.m. near Birnie Road eight kilometres west of Sicamous due to a vehicle collision that also cut power to the area.

An assessment is in progress and a detour available via Highway 97A and 97B.

Additionally, BC Hydro estimated power to return around 4 p.m.

UPDATE 10:53 a.m.

The vehicle crash between Canoe Beach Drive NE and Bernie Road is now the cause of the power outages. 

BC Hydro has a crew on scene while the crash has been cleared. 

According to Environment Canada, 2-4 cm of snow is expected on Friday.

A transmission circuit failure is the cause of multiple power outages across Sicamous, Highway 1, and Highway 97A on Friday, Jan. 10.

The power has been out for more than 4,300 residents in the area since 8:50 a.m., according to BC Hydro.

The TransCanada Highway is also closed in both directions.

DriveBC reports a vehicle incident between Canoe Beach Drive NE and Bernie Road (eight kilometres west of Sicamous to Salmon Arm).

There is no detour available.

The next update is expected around 1 p.m.

The power outage runs from Annis Bay, up Highway 1 to Three Valley Gap, and south down Highway 97A to Rosemund Lake.

BC Hydro has a crew assigned to the scene.
