With temperatures soaring, there are warnings out about staying safe in the heat.

Too much heat can be harmful to your health and can lead to weakness, disorientation and exhaustion and in severe cases, heat stroke or sunstroke, says Interior Health, noting that heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency.

With that in mind here are some signs to watch for and suggested tips to keep you safe and healthy.

Who is most at risk?

香蕉视频直播 Infants and children up to four years of age who rely on adults to make sure their environments are comfortable and provide them with enough fluids.

香蕉视频直播 People 65 years of age or older who may not compensate for heat stress efficiently and are less likely to sense and respond to high temperatures.

香蕉视频直播 Healthy individuals who do a lot of physical activity or work in a hot environment.

香蕉视频直播 Those with heart problems and breathing difficulties.

Symptoms to watch for?

The symptoms of heat-related illness can range from mild to severe. They include:

香蕉视频直播 pale, cool, moist skin;

香蕉视频直播 heavy sweating;

香蕉视频直播 muscle cramps;

香蕉视频直播 rash;

香蕉视频直播 swelling, especially hands and feet;

香蕉视频直播 fatigue and weakness;

香蕉视频直播 dizziness and/or fainting;

香蕉视频直播 headache;

香蕉视频直播 nausea and/or vomiting;

香蕉视频直播 fever, particularly a core body temperature of 40掳 C (104掳 F) or more;

香蕉视频直播 confusion and decreased mental alertness;

香蕉视频直播 hallucinations;

香蕉视频直播 red, hot, dry skin (in the late stages of heat stroke);

香蕉视频直播 seizures; and

香蕉视频直播 unconsciousness/coma

What should a person do if they are experiencing symptoms? When recognized early, most mild heat-related illnesses can be treated at home. Home treatment for mild heat exhaustion may include:

香蕉视频直播 moving to a cooler environment;

香蕉视频直播 drinking plenty of cool, non-alcoholic fluids;

香蕉视频直播 resting;

香蕉视频直播 taking a cool shower or bath; and

香蕉视频直播 wearing lightweight clothing

If your symptoms last longer than one hour, change, worsen or cause you concern, contact a health-care provider.

What steps can people take to avoid heat related illness?

香蕉视频直播 Never leave children alone in a parked car. Temperatures can rise to 52掳 C (125掳 F) within 20 minutes inside a vehicle when the outside temperature is 34掳 C (93掳 F). Leaving the car windows slightly open will not keep the inside of the vehicle at a safe temperature.

香蕉视频直播 Drink plenty of fluids. Drink extra water even before you feel thirsty.

香蕉视频直播 Keep cool - stay indoors in air-conditioned buildings or take a cool bath or shower. At temperatures above 30掳 C (86掳F), fans alone may not be able to prevent heat-related illness. Remember, sunscreen will protect against the sun香蕉视频直播檚 ultraviolet (UV) rays but not from the heat.

香蕉视频直播 Plan your outdoor activity before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m., when the sun香蕉视频直播檚 Ultra Violet Radiation (UVR) is the weakest.

香蕉视频直播 Avoid tiring work or exercise in hot, humid environments. If you must work or exercise, drink 2 to 4 glasses of non-alcoholic fluids each hour. Rest breaks are important and should be taken in the shade.

香蕉视频直播 Avoid sunburn - use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

香蕉视频直播 Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and a wide brimmed hat, or use an umbrella for shade.

香蕉视频直播 Regularly check older adults, children and others for signs of heat-related illness and make sure they are keeping cool and drinking plenty of fluids. Check on those who are unable to leave their homes, and people with emotional or mental health concerns whose judgment may be impaired.
