The fire at the Glenmore Landfill has been extinguished.

Around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 10, the Kelowna Fire Department received calls about a large fire at the Glenmore Landfill. Upon arrival, the blaze was estimated to be 50 feet by 50 feet in size at the north end of the landfill.

Fire crews and landfill staff worked together to battle the blaze. Landfill staff operated their heavy equipment and used water tenders to help control the fire and eventually extinguish it.

The fire department says it took them most of the night to extinguish the fire because of limited access to the scene and water supplies as well as heavy smoke in the area which slowed down the process.

No one was injured while tackling the fire.

The cause of the fire remains unknown but is not suspicious.

Kelowna fire had four engines, two tenders, one bush truck, a command unit and a safety unit including 20 fire personnel at the scene. The landfill used two pieces of heavy equipment and two water tenders. The Kelowna RCMP, emergency services, and the Salvation Army also attended the scene.

The Glenmore Landfill is open today - Tuesday, July 11.
