A Summerland-based organization opposed to a gravel mine in the community is asking for donations to take legal action to stop the operation.
A letter was sent out by the Garnet Valley Agri-Tourism Association on Jan. 23.

In 2024, members of the agri-tourism association raised concerns about a gravel pit operation that had been approved for the area, despite opposition from the municipality of Summerland, the Summerland Chamber of Commerce, Indigenous bands and others.
Then, on Oct. 1, an effort was launched to raise money for a legal challenge against the gravel pit. This challenge was organized by the Garnet Valley Agri-Tourism Association.
The legal challenge is a judicial review application, which will be filed to stop the gravel pit.
Members of the Garnet Valley Agri-Tourism Association are concerned with the effects of heavy truck traffic, noise and dust, damage to the roadway, destruction of the area, a drop in property values and other effects from the gravel pit.
Donations for the legal appeal can be made at garnet-valley.com.
The fundraising request comes at the same time as Summerland council has drafted a resolution to bring before the Southern Interior Local Government Association, taking issue with the process used to make the decision to approve the gravel pit.
