The fire, caused by a ruptured gas line from a lightning strike, was quickly snuffed out by Vernon fire crews on Saturday evening.

A lightning strike that sparked a fire in a Vernon residence prompted a quick response from Vernon Fire Rescue Services (VFRS).

The fire was reported at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14. Upon arrival to the scene, crews discovered that the strike ruptured a gas line, which ignited the fire.

Fortunately, the blaze was contained to the burning gas and a large spruce tree directly above the compromised gas line.

In coordination with other agencies, including FortisBC, VFRS was able to control and extinguish the fire. The spruce tree sustained "significant" damage, and its removal has been recommended by VFRS.

"Thanks to the quick response and cooperation of various agencies, we were able to manage the situation safely and efficiently," said deputy fire chief Alan Hofsink. "This event highlights the importance of FireSmart practices in maintaining the safety of your property."

No injuries were reported and the city is reminding residents of the FireSmart program, which can be viewed at .
