With $94,000 in federal funding, the Shuswap Association for Community Living will be purchasing a wheelchair accessible bus to better serve the community.

Fuelled by a $94,000 investment from the federal government, the Shuswap Association for Community Living (SACL) is buying a wheelchair accessible bus in order to expand its services to people with disabilities in Salmon Arm and surrounding communities.

Prior to this purchase, public transit in the area has been limited for people who rely on wheelchair accessible vehicles, and the new bus will help allow those individuals to actively participate in SACL programming, which includes employment services, supported living, community housing, outreach and home sharing.

"This investment in a wheelchair accessible bus will make a meaningful difference in the lives of many in the Shuswap; it's a significant step forward for the Shuswap Association for Community Living and the communities it serves," SACL executive director Karen Hansen said in a media release. "Being able to facilitate transportation fo individuals, regardless of mobility challenges, can access services and opportunities they need to live fulfilling lives."

The government is investing the $94,000 through the Rural Transit Solutions Fund (RTSF), while the SACL is contributing $33,443. The RTSF helps Canadians in rural and remote areas get around more easily, and supports the development of transit solutions in those communities.

"We are proud to invest in and support services that allow people to engage and grow within their communities," Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit S. Sajjan said on behalf of Housing Minister Sean Fraser. "We will continue collaborating with communities across Canada to provide transit service options that meet the unique needs of rural communities."
