Brush burns test Vernon's fire detection system next week

The burns will take place in a controlled environment as early as Jan. 8

Smoke that may be seen in the Eastside Road area of Vernon next week won't be a cause for concern.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services and the Forest Enhancement Society of B.C. will be conducting brush pile burns near the south end of Eastside Road as part of ongoing wildland fire mitigation efforts.

The burns will take place in a controlled environment starting as early as Jan. 8 and will coincide with further testing of SenseNet, the city's early wildfire detection system.

Residents and visitors in the area are advised that smoke may be visible during the testing period.

"The city appreciates the communityÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s understanding and cooperation as it continues to implement proactive measures to enhance wildfire resiliency and safety," the city said in a press release Friday.
