Environment Canada issued a special weather statement advising that an atmospheric river could bring 50-80 mm of rain and possible snow to Highway 1 from Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass this weekend.

Environment Canada is predicting a wet, and potentially snowy, weekend for the Rogers Pass this weekend in a weather alert issued for Highway 1.

Covering Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass, North Columbia, Kinbasket and West Columbia, the special weather statement issued on Oct. 17 calls for "heavy rain with storm totals of 50 to 80 mm" starting this Friday.

"An atmospheric river is taking aim at southern BC and will bring a period of heavy and prolonged rain to the Columbia region beginning Friday afternoon and continuing through the weekend," the advisory states. "The Trans-Canada Highway near Rogers Pass may see we snow Friday afternoon before it quickly changes to rain as the weather system brings in mild air."

The statement adds the rainfall could increase risks of water pooling on roads, washouts and landslides, and warns that weather in mountain passes can change suddenly, resulting in hazardous driving conditions.

See and for updates.
