Lisa Adlem is the proud mom of 13-year-old Cayden, who is currently prepping for the Karate World Championships in Japan.
The Kelowna teen started karate after meeting a local sensei during a preschool trip about a decade ago. Adlem said Cayden and her husband signed up for the family classes at the local dojo and fell in love with the sport.
"He's been to nationals twice and medalled in all his events both times," Adlem boasted.
The 16th Funakoshi Ginchin Cup Karate World Championships are taking place in Gunma, Japan from Oct. 25 to 27.
"He's excited, but he's nervous," Adlem said about Cayden. "Japan is the home of karate."
The family is hosting a fundraiser on Sept. 27 to help cover the costs of travel.
"We leave Kelowna on the 16th of October and they have a solid week of training out there at headquarters," Adlem said the cost of travel for the three of them will be over $10,000.
The fundraiser will be a comedy show at Green Gables Daycare starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are being sold for $30 and include a free drink. The evening will also include a silent auction and snack boxes from TJ's Grazing.
"There's been lots of local businesses that have donated to the cause," Adlem said.
Silent auction items include Vancouver Canucks tickets, a full karate package with a one-month membership, and a luxury stay at Big White.
"It's an opportunity of a lifetime," she added.
