West Kelowna property owners could be faced with an 8.35 per cent tax increase for 2025.
The property tax hike for 2024 was 6.85 per cent. Staff had originally projected a 11.4 per cent increase for 2024 during initial budget talks in December last year.
On Dec. 18 and 19, city staff will present a detailed review of the proposed 2025 financial plan to council, seeking feedback on the suggested revenues and expenditures.
A staff report shows an overall increase in salaries and wages in the base budget, including union contracts and exempt salariesm, is up 5 per cent, with benefits up over 30 per cent and another significant increase to WorkSafe BC costs. Council costs are up 12.25 per cent due mostly to conferences, benefits increase and exempt costs, the report states.
Departments such as engineering and fire and rescue are seeing increases due to added staff positions and higher wages, while others, such as parks and recreation, face rising costs partially offset by increased revenues. The capital budget for 2025 is projected at $17.37 million, down from $32.2 million in 2024. Council will have $3.31 million in discretionary funds for additional projects, resources, or reserves.
Public consultations on the draft plan are scheduled for late January and early February, including two in-person sessions, with dates yet to be finalized.
