Keeping the Kelowna Community Theatre (KCT) while building a new performing arts centre is one of the main recommendations from the Community Task Force on Performing Arts.

A staff report going to city council on Monday, Dec. 9, also suggests renovating the existing 62-year-old KCT and continuing the task forceÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s work in an advisory role.

The task force, formed in August 2023, was tasked with finding partnership opportunities to redevelop the KCT, collecting public input on the project, improving collaboration among performing arts groups, and exploring fundraising options to help pay for a new facility.

The report highlights the challenges KelownaÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s arts community faces without more performance spaces, noting that growth would be limited. Adding more venues would create significant economic, cultural, and social benefits for the city.

If council approves these recommendations, city staff will begin developing an implementation plan. This will include working with stakeholders, finding a location, analyzing space needs, and planning and design work. Staff will provide updates to council as the project moves forward.
