Okanagan snow pack levels remain below normal

Dry conditions add risk of drought this year

The snow pack recorded in the Okanagan Valley is lower than normal, according to the most recent provincial figures.

The March 1 statistics, released on March 11, showed the region had received 82 per cent of its normal snow pack for this time of year. The snow pack in the Boundary region was 86 per cent of normal and in the Similkameen it was 60 per cent of normal for March 1.

The statistics were compiled by the province香蕉视频直播檚 Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship and are based on manual snow courses and automated snow weather stations around British Columbia.

The trends seen in the Okanagan and Similkameen reflect a province-wide trend this year. Every region of the province had lower than normal snow pack measurements.

As of March 1, British Columbia香蕉视频直播檚 snow pack provincewide was 73 per cent of normal levels for the date. This is similar to the Feb. 1 measurements, which were 72 per cent of normal.

By contrast, the beginning of March was considerably drier a year ago, at just 66 per cent of normal snow pack levels.

According to the provincial data, February temperatures and precipitations were both below normal.

So far in March, temperatures have been above normal, while precipitation has been low.

The low snow pack is raising concerns about the possibility of drought later this year.

By the beginning of March, around 80 per cent of the annual snow pack has accumulated. However, there are still four to eight weeks remaining in the snow accumulation period.
