Fraudulent calls that appear to use the Kelowna RCMP香蕉视频直播檚 non-emergency phone number are once again making their rounds.
According to Cpl. Michael Gauthier, fraudsters are manipulating caller ID to make it appear as though they are calling from the Kelowna RCMP detachment香蕉视频直播檚 non-emergency line (250-762-3300) and posing as an RCMP officer with a fake badge number.
The callers then tell the potential victim they are being investigated for a criminal offence and ask them to provide or clarify their personal information.
This isn香蕉视频直播檛 the first time a series of spoof calls have involved the RCMP香蕉视频直播檚 non-emergency phone number, police warned the public of a similar scam in 2023 and 2024.
Then in January 2025, the RCMP issued a statement regarding unsolicited text messages claiming that the police are unable to deliver court documents and to click a link to reschedule a court date. The text message included a Canada logo, a Canadian flag and the RCMP logo in an attempt to deceive the person receiving this fake text.
In this latest round of scams Cpl. Gauthier, asks when confronted about the legitimacy of the call, the would-be victims are encouraged to search the displayed phone number online and verify for themselves.
香蕉视频直播淲e have received nearly 20 calls from would-be victims around the country trying to ascertain the legitimacy of these spoof phone calls,香蕉视频直播 said Cpl. Gauthier. 香蕉视频直播淔ortunately, because they did in fact call us directly, we were able to confirm these calls as fraudulent and ease their concerns. We are still looking into these incidents and are unaware of any financial loss at this time.香蕉视频直播
How to Protect Yourself from Caller ID Spoofing Scams:
- If you are not expecting a call or do not recognize the caller ID, let the call go to your voicemail;
- Be mindful that scammers can alter their phone numbers to appear on your display;
- Do not progress through any automated prompts if you are unsure of the call;
- If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Kelowna RCMP or identifying themselves as an officer, you may ask for their name, associated file number and purpose of the call, and call the detachment directly using the contact information you know and trust;
- Never provide your personal or financial information over the phone if you did not initiate the call.
