Fused glass artist and instructor Carly Beckstead has opened her new glass studio, Coastal Breeze Glassworks, at 1-3045 Tutt St. (Tutt Street Square) in Kelowna.
The studio will be used to both sell her own artwork and for customers to come and make their own fused glass projects. Carly has and will continue to teach classes at Parkinson Recreation Centre, the Vibrant Vine Winery, Ellis Art Studios, Studio on Water and the Kelowna Art Gallery. Some of the artwork that Carly makes are suncatchers, Christmas ornaments, framed artwork, and coasters and dishes. The studio officially opened Wednesday, Aug. 21, and Carly will host an open house grand opening on Saturday, Sept. 21. Her shop is now open Wednesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A shout out to those who can help out by supporting the fundraising effort of the Central Okanagan FC U15 boys soccer team. The boys recently won the A15 B.C. championship, qualifying them for a berth in the Canadian U15 finals being held in Quinte West, Ontario, from Oct. 9 to 14. The national and provincial soccer federations provide some financial support to help with the travel and accommodation costs, but the team needs to fundraise to help off-set their share of the costs. So for anyone who can step up and help their fundraising efforts, it would be greatly appreciated as Kelowna will be represented on a national stage in this event, an experience these boys will never forget as only 15 and 17 year-olds get to compete for a Canadian championship in youth soccer. Model Bean Coffee Co. has relocated from their original location in Rutland to a new location in the Capri Centre Mall, between the Dollar Store and the Mall entrance. Owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Camilo Isaza and Diana Torres, along with training their son Nicholas, the coffee house is larger, brighter and cheery with seating inside and a lovely outside patio. Model Bean offers a good variety of high-quality specialty coffees. If you are not a coffee drinker, you can try one of their sparkling flavoured lemonades. Their coffee has a distinctive taste South American flavour as their coffee beans come from Colombia. You can also purchase the coffee by the pound to take home and enjoy. Model Bean offers baking and treats, some of which are traditional recipes from Colombia with tropical flavours made by the family. Hours are currently Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but Model Bean will be open seven days a week starting in September.
Karine Lawrence, is the founder and principal consultant of Sirocco Food + Wine Consulting, based in Kelowna. Karine holds a Master of Food Science degree as well as a food engineering degree from France. She has been a BC VQA Wine Assessor for 10 years. Karine has worked for the wine and food industry for over 20 years and since the inception of Sirocco Food + Wine Consulting in 2014, has provided training and consulting services to over 600 small and medium size companies in B.C., Canada and the US. The team of four scientists provide services in English, French, Spanish and Chinese. Sirocco prepare food safety plans for food importers, exporters and manufacturers and conducts accredited food safety training. They certify food and beverage processing clients and farms to food safety standards. Sirocco also provide food and beverage labeling services for the Canadian and U.S. market. They replace appointee Juliette Cunningham and Tina Lee. The Kelowna chapter of Probus Canada will hold its first meeting of the year Aug. 26, 9 a.m., at the Seniors Centre, 1353 Richter St. Probus is a volunteer-based, non-profit, non-political, non-sectarian organization for seniors in retirement and semi-retirement. Project 1000 is a Jamaica Hurricane Relief Drive on Friday, Aug. 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 31, from 1 to 5 p.m., at 2777 Hwy. 97N. The Category 5 Hurricane Beryl ravaged Jamaica leaving over 1,000 people in emergency shelters with many terrifying issues.
