A fire that erupted at Kelowna's Tent City, just off Weddell Place, created a cloud of black smoke the billowed over the city on the evening of June 20.
The blaze started at approximately 7:40 p.m., on June 20, and was quickly extinguished by the Kelowna Fire Department, as well as residents of the encampment for people experiencing un-sheltered homelessness.
Fire crews were able to respond within minutes of the first spark as they happened to be participating in the annual located just down the road at Elk Stadium. All proceeds from ticket sales at the game will be donated to the Professional Firefighters Burn Fund.
Firefighter John Baillie said that he and the crew saw the smoke and immediately jumped into action, even before receiving the first page for the blaze.
"On arrival it was fully engulfed," said Baillie of the fire, which completely destroyed a man's shelter.
There were no injuries in the fire. The destruction caused by the blaze is already being cleaned up, with help from the resident's neighbours.
