Central Okanagan Public Schools was represented at the Westbank First Nations Indigenous Veterans Day ceremony held last Wednesday.
Deputy superintendent Terry Beaudry was on hand for the ceremony, held at the WFN VeteransÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™ Monument to honour the memory of Indigenous veterans from the First and Second World Wars along with the Korean War.
More than 4,000 Indigenous people served in the First World War, while more than 4,200 served in the Second World War.
Flags at school and district sites were flown at half-mast last Wednesday, and that was repeated on Friday to recognize Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, on the weekend.

Some of the PremierÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s Awards for Excellence in Education recipients were on hand at the Central Okanagan Board of Education meeting Wednesday (Nov. 8) to be congratulated by school trustees.
The award winners were: Amanda Liebel, teacher, extracurricular leadership, Constable Neil Bruce Middle; Jim Elwood, teacher, Mount Boucherie Secondary, Indigenous education; Rob Bennett, teacher, École Kelowna Secondary, and Lauren Klassen, teacher, Constable Neil Bruce Middle, outstanding new teacher; Amanda Hilverda, education assistant, École Kelowna Secondary, and Danielle Brown, education assistant, Constable Neil Bruce Middle, outstanding support - teaching assistant.
The awards were presented at a ceremony held at Government House in Victoria.

The UBC Okanagan faculty will host an Engineering Open House event on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., for high school students.
The open house takes place at the Engineering, Management, and Education Building on the Kelowna campus, 1137 Alumni Ave.
The university is also gearing up its weekly STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math( sessions for Grade 1-10 students this winter.

These sessions are led by undergraduate staff on Saturday mornings, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The registration cost is $240 for 10 sessions, and financial assistance is available through bursary application opportunities.
