A school district staff report outlines the need for a catchment area boundary adjustment involving Webber Road and Shannon Lake elementary schools in West Kelowna.
A new subdivision created along Smith Creek Road has raised the issue of the subdivision being split between the two school catchment boundaries.
The current catchment boundary was established in January 2022 with future Smith Creek development included in the Shannon Lake catchment to accommodate the proposed future neighbourhood.
A new road is proposed from the Smith Creek neighbourhood to connect the Tallas neighbourhood, and this road would eventually provide appropriate access to Shannon Lake Elementary.
The 53 new lots created along Smith Creek Road include the new roads Scenic Ridge Drive, Eagle Bluff Drive and Flume Court. These new roads are not within the Smith Creek development as the parcels were created in the spring of 2024.
This subdivision was not identified in 2022 when the catchment boundary was redrawn for the reopening of Webber Road Elementary.
Trustees have approved a staff recommendation to adjust the catchment boundary to include the new subdivision parcels within the Webber Road Elementary catchment.
As no new houses have been built as of yet, there are no students affected as of yet and no need to follow the public consultation protocol when catchment area changes are made.
